Refractory Crook Anchor — Stainless Steel & Inconel Furnace Anchor for Refractory Lining

Refractory Crook Anchor — Stainless Steel & Inconel Furnace Anchor for Refractory Lining

Basically, a refractory crook anchor is a single-leg metal bar bent into a crook or hook shape. Then, workers weld it to the steel shell of a furnace, kiln, or heater. Additionally, this design holds ceramic fibre lining and castable refractory in place. Therefore, Tarco Industry manufactures these refractory crook anchors from 5–16mm diameter bar in stainless steel grades 304, 310, 316, 321 and Inconel 601 — with crook spans of 75mm, 100mm or 125mm. Furthermore, we can make them to your drawing. Also, our factory is ISO 9001:2015 certified.

What Is a Refractory Crook Anchor?

Refractory Crook Anchor for Furnace Lining

Indeed, a refractory crook anchor is the simplest and most affordable form of refractory anchor. First, the manufacturer bends a single metal bar into a hook or crook shape. Next, they weld it directly to the furnace shell. As a result, the crook sticks out into the refractory lining. Once workers apply the castable or ceramic fibre, it grips the material from within — stopping it from sagging, cracking or breaking away during thermal cycling.

Moreover, crook anchors specifically suit thinner refractory linings and ceramic-fibre systems where heavy holding power is not required. They are quick to install by stud welding and protect the lining by stopping crevices from forming, which could lead to spalling or hot-spot corrosion. However, manufacturers can produce the same crook geometry in Inconel 601 or Incoloy 800 when a higher-temperature grade is needed — for example in reformer or incinerator service above 1100°C.

For strict quality assurance, our refractory crook anchor production follows ASTM standards. You can also view our full range of refractory anchors or contact Tarco Industry directly for custom requirements.

Refractory Crook Anchor Material Selection Guide

For example, choosing the correct material for your refractory crook anchor is the single most important decision for anchor service life. The anchor sits inside the lining, close to the hot face. Consequently, it must retain its strength against oxidation, scaling and thermal fatigue.

SS 304 / 304L

Up to ~800°C

We recommend SS 304 / 304L for low-to-medium temperature furnace linings, ducts and stacks. This general-purpose stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance and weldability at a budget-friendly cost.

SS 310 / 310S

Up to ~1100°C

In contrast, SS 310 is the standard choice for most industrial furnace refractory anchors. Its high chromium and nickel content delivers excellent oxidation resistance under cyclic heating conditions.

SS 316 / 316L

Up to ~870°C

Specifically, we recommend SS 316 / 316L for places with chlorides or reducing acids. This molybdenum-bearing grade is preferred where corrosion resistance is the primary concern.

Inconel 601

Up to ~1200°C

Furthermore, this nickel-chromium alloy features an aluminium addition for outstanding oxidation resistance at the highest temperatures. Additionally, it resists carburisation and sulfidation — making it ideal for reformers, incinerators and petrochemical heaters.

Refractory Crook Anchor Applications

For instance, refractory crook anchors are used across high-temperature industries wherever a thinner lining or ceramic-fibre system needs mechanical retention:

  • Furnace linings — petrochemical process furnaces, heaters, stacks, breechings
  • Kiln linings — cement rotary kilns, lime kilns, ceramic kilns
  • Ceramic fibre modules — blanket and folded-module wall systems
  • Castable refractory — gunned or poured monolithic linings over crook anchors
  • Reformers & incinerators — Inconel 601 crook anchors for 1100–1200°C service
  • Brick lining support — as a back-up retention system for firebrick courses
  • Boiler & duct insulation — low and medium temperature linings in power plants

Refractory Crook Anchor Installation & Ordering

Generally, installers use stud welding to attach crook anchors directly to a clean, brushed area of the steel shell. Standard stud welding with a ceramic ferrule is the most common method. Subsequently, workers weld each anchor once, with the crook pointing outward into the lining cavity. Also, they may use manual arc welding for larger-diameter bars or field repairs.

To order, first specify: material grade, bar diameter, crook span, overall length and quantity. Additionally, we can manufacture custom geometries — including asymmetric crooks, longer legs or bent tips — to your drawing. Consequently, our standard lead time is 2–4 weeks; however, custom anchors take 3–6 weeks depending on material availability.

Refractory Crook Anchor FAQ

What is the difference between a crook anchor and a V or Y anchor?
Specifically, a crook anchor features a single-leg hook — the simplest and most affordable design. Manufacturers intend it for thinner linings where holding power is modest. In contrast, a V anchor uses two legs welded to the shell and anchors a wider area of lining. Additionally, a Y anchor has a single stem welded to the shell and two legs extending into the lining, providing deeper anchorage for medium-to-thick monolithic refractory. Therefore, crook anchors are the best choice for ceramic-fibre blanket systems and thin castable linings.
What material should I use for a furnace operating at 1150°C?
At 1150°C, SS310 is at the upper end of its practical range. However, for reliable long-term service at this temperature — particularly in cyclic or carburising atmospheres — we recommend Inconel 601. For instance, Inconel 601 offers superior creep rupture stress and oxidation resistance compared to 310 stainless steel. Additionally, it resists both carburisation and sulfidation.
Can refractory crook anchors be made to custom dimensions?
Certainly. We routinely manufacture crook anchors to customer drawings. Additionally, you can customise bar diameter, crook span, leg length, bend angle and tip profile. Furthermore, we also offer bespoke anchors including two-part designs and multiple anchor legs.
Do you provide mill test certificates?
Indeed. We provide Manufacture Test Certificates and NABL-approved test certificates for all crook anchors. Therefore, these confirm material grade, chemical composition and mechanical properties.
